  • What Supercharger should i go with???

I am up in the air between 3 SC's and not sure what to go with. I know 2 of these are about the same but would like your input...

    Procharger
    Vortech
    Whipple

    Let the debates begain lol

    TURBO FTW!!!!!!

But if you decide a supercharger I like the Whipple. I'm not a fan of the directiong of where the intake pipe falls right over the engine and and exhaust on the other two.

Each path to FI has it's ups and downs and should be considered relative to your goals....

PD (Positive or Fixed Displacement) Blower eg Maggie, Whipple
Moves air through the system at a fixed rate, meaning that in theory at WOT you are getting a constant level of boost, which is dictated by the rate at which you are spinning the blower.

          Centrifugal Blower eg procharger, vortech
The rate at which this style of supercharger moves air is a non-linear function of it's driven speed, meaning as engine speed increases, the amount of air a centrifugal moves increases. In other words it takes time to 'ramp' up. if you're into math, think an exponential curve(roughly)

These differences are pretty easy to see when you compare dyno sheets of similarly modded cars with one style vs. another. You will notice that the PD blower will have a much flatter torque curve, where as the centri. will ramp up in a more gradual fashion.

NOW... the implications of all of this is where the arguing comes into play regarding what's better for the street vs. strip, etc etc. I'm not going to touch that w/ a 10FT pole. Ride in both types of cars if possible and see what you like! Send me a PM if you're local and i'd be happy to take you for a spin in my SS.

          Oh yea... and Turbos

Due to the nature of turbochargers, that is, the use of exiting exhaust gas to drive a turbine to generate boost (whereas superchargers are parasitic... they use power to create power) A turbo setup is a more efficient means of generating power from a FI system
The downside though, is what you are all familiar with.. turbo lag. This can be minimized by sizing the turbines correctly (bigger not always better)
Another downside is that custom exhaust must be fabricated to integrate the system, not to mention the additional heat it generates, forcing you to wrap and shield ALOT of stuff to avoid melting wires, etc etc. But you do get the cool WHOOOOSH soounds

          hope this helps!
