I would agree with Jeremy and Jim, and here's why. I started with a hand held tuner used by someone that had experience tuning cars. I bought it for two reasons; one was to turn off the fuel management, two because I had installed shorty headers and exhaust. The car seemed to run fine until I went to a C5G Dyno Day about 6 months later and found that was not the case. I sold the hand held and had the car Dyno tuned and the car was so much better afterwards. That's my experience. Dyno tunes are typically a little more money, but IMO, worth it. I know there are some people out there that are really good with hand held tuners and I'm not saying anything bad about them, but for me, it didn't work out. My hand held tuner was a Diablo if you want to know. It worked fine and did what it was meant to do.
Every car that we tune we start from scratch. Cookie cutter canned tunes are a crap shoot. Sometimes they are close other times they are NOT, but very rarely are they spot on.
We have found major issues with canned FI tunes for most of the major companies over the years and have helped to correct them. We have even seen a stock FI tune from a major that it melted pistons on the third pull.
I have the diablo intune and when I had the tune it came with on my car I really didn't notice any crazy gains. They're really only useful to tune out AFM and being able to read check engine lights.

I blew the motor on a 2006 monte carlo ss (LS4) and I always thought my diablo predator was the cause.

Thanks for the kind words guys! As others have said above, there is a reason most reputable shops spend tens of thousands of dollars on dyno and tuning equipment. Custom dyno tunes can lead to better performance but more importantly lead to SAFER performance as we're able to monitor important data while making changes. Tuning with a handheld tuner is somewhat akin to having brain surgery performed by a doctor who has done it 100s of times without anything hooked up to monitor your heart rate, pulse, oxygen levels, etc. It could work out okay, but I wouldn't sign up.
Please let us know if we can help! With a DynoDynamics dyno and two tuners on staff we'd be happy to help!
Custom dyno tune is definitely the way to go. Any local speed shop will get you 80% of the way there. To get the most out of your car, I'd suggest buying HP tuners and logging/tweaking things here and there as you learn. Just in my own experience I picked up a .3 by getting the car tuned by a shop, and after tweaking the tune to my liking I've picked up another .2 in the 1/4
The above is just one of the reasons we at NicKey use a remote data logger, programer, tuner, option so that we can make ajustments for you remotely and on the fly.

Two thumbs up on this! It has worked out very well for me being 2 hours away.
