now I am having mixed feelings about it. It has 20k miles on it. Think that might be a little excessive for something I don't know how it was treated.

This is true, but its not common to have a bad converter. You gotta weigh the options of new vs used. How much are you saving by going used. Is it worth it to take a chance. Something that's always recommended is a upgraded transfer cooler. I know of several that would have preserved their trans with just that additional mod.
