GM is giving us a key and a owners manual insert. They will remove the key from the remote's and give you two new keys. The insert show how to properly and keys to your new keys including you remote.

Today I was talking with the owner of a Chevy Dealership about the recall. He said that if an owner takes their car in for any service, the dealership is required to do the key replacement with no approval by the owner. I asked him why not let a person sign a waver or document stating they have elected not to do the recall. He said they (dealerships) are required by law to do the recall.
He showed me the new key replacement. Apparently they laser cut two new keys and give you a new fob. One idea I thought of was to tell the dealer you lost the second switch blade fob and keep it to use after the recall is done.

Note: If a customer declines this recall repair, please make sure that he/she fully understands the possible consequences.
There is a risk, under certain conditions, that some drivers may bump the ignition key with their knee and unintentionally move the key away from the position. If this occurs, engine power, and power braking will be affected and power steering may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash. The timing of the key movement out of the position, relative to the activation of the sensing algorithm of the crash event, may result in the airbags not deploying, increasing the potential for occupant injury in certain kinds of crashes.If the customer still refuses, provide the customer with a copy of the Notice to Customer document contained in this bulletin. Record customer declined recall repair on the repair order and, if possible, have the customer sign the repair order. I don't know if all dealers are taking this on the same way. I commented to him that it seems strange that a car owner has no choice in the matter and that the dealer would replace your key without asking. His answer was, "we have to do it, by law". He may have just said that, I don't know. We'll see how it turns out when someone takes their car in for service.sigpic

Just a thought, as I asked my dealer. Why not order a third key now, with original key FOB, than turn in only two keys for recall. You still end up with your original looking Key FOB and 2 more keys? Dealer said they still have the originals ones in stock to sell. You paid for that one they can't ask for it back.I am a SHOWSTOPPER!!!

When you go to your dealer, for ANY repair, right above your signature, put in big bold capital letters,
"I specifically do NOT authorize you to perform any recall, replacement or repair work on my key FOB or key assembly" and hereby DECLINE the recall repairs."
that way they can't say , "well we lost the decline letter or the mechanic didn't see the decline letter, sorry man"
If you don't want it, you don't have to get it. Until the government starts handing out traffic citations for violating NTSA safety standards, I think we are all okay.
Now for those of you kids that don't have your car paid off yet and GMAC holds the paper, I could see GMAC saying look we still own it and therefore your getting a different key because we have a right to protect our collateral in the promissory note. I don't think they have figured that angle out yet ! Or your private Bank financing could take your refusal to participate in a safety recall as a violation of your promissory note on their collateral and hold you in default, but then again, I have not seen yet any language in most bank financing papers specifically dealing with this issue of recalls.
Just remember boys and girls SAFETY FIRST, practice SAFE driving and make good choices.
