  • Close call

Monday evening we had a close call at the house. I was working late just a mile or so from home. I get a phone call from my wife to get home right away.
Out of nowhere on a clear windless evening a 12 inch diameter tree limb breaks and falls on the house.
My youngest son was just standing below the tree a moment before it fell.He was working on his Jetski in the driveway. He said there was no warning ,he heard the tree crack and before he could turn and look the limb was down.
Thank god he wasn't under it.
The roof suffered minor damage to some shingles and the gutter was bent up pretty good.
My oldest son has a friend that works for a tree service. He came over to help get the tree off the house. There were 6 of us on the rope to try to lift the limb off the roof it didn't budge. We had to hook up the rope to our Avalanche to to lift the limb .
It turns out the crotch of the tree was rotted inside.
Had this happened an hour later the Camaro would have been parked where the limb came down. I was supposed to clean it that evening for a car show that was to be on Tuesday at Argonne National Laboratory .
Anyway ,no one was hurt, car is fine and only minor damage to house.
The rest of the tree comes down on Friday.

Photos are pretty pixilated, but it looks like the branch union was included on the left side with only a small amount of attached wood on the right. The limb doesn't have a lot of taper, which puts a lot of gravity load on the end of the lever. The weight of the limb then pulls the branch free from the main trunk. These internal defects can be hard to see until the branch fails. Glad no one was hurt and only minor property damage.
