  • Vehicle Transport vs Driving...

I have some bad news. I've accepted a job in Orange County, CA, which means that I will be moving. I will miss you all greatly.

    I won't miss the weather!

Anyway, I need to move my car somehow. Should I drive it from Schaumburg, IL to Irvine, CA, or should I get vehicle transport? What you would all do? I know the advantages and disadvantages to each. There are risks of driving, and there are risks of transport. It's highly subjective, but I'm torn so many ways on this.

    Thanks!

I guess I would probably weigh the costs and see if that helped me decide. If money was no object, I would transport it.

Hey I did the CA move this year so best bet is what you want....The only deal for me was the 2 Blizzards I ran into with my Trailblazer AWD. I waited until spring to fly back and drive the car out. It was so much fun! If you like to drive do it, if you want it out and you are getting a relo Ship it. I can give you a good company that gave me great rates when I did my turbo upgrade for an enclosed trailer.....

CA is AWESOME I put double the miles on the Camaro in 6 months vs the first 2.5 years of driving in IL..

Let me know when you are coming out...I travel to Edwards AFB every month....Some times I take the Camaro.....

If you don't already have a clear bra, you will spend a good 500 after you get there to repaint the front bumper after all the chips not counting side gills hood...
          Ship it, trailer it !
by the way a big congrats, I interviewed in Costa Mesa when I was in law school, great area !

I would love to know that company, if you don't mind. I want enclosed trailer versus... beater above dripping oil on me while my car gets salt all over it en route. Where at in CA do you live?

I'm coming out November 18th, then coming back to Chicagoland November 27th to pack my stuff. I'm going to be permanently in Irvine from December 16th onward.

I have a clear bra, Bill, actually, and it has saved me from numerous things. I have the bra done separately on the stripes from the paint.

            Here's a close-up:

I've put the clear bra to the high-speed test :

My main concern with driving a Camaro to California at this time of year would be the low temps at high speeds on the interstate for extended periods of time. You know that though.

Concern #2 is Tornado Alley. Every time, and I do mean every time, I have run Oklahoma and Texas twisters start landing. They touchdown without warning, are incredibly scary, move faster than one would think, and you can't see. All you can do is punch it and pray.

Other than heavy muscle cars on performance tires driving cross country in the winter and God trying to kill you with massive storms you're good to go.

Say hi to Cousin Eddie for me, please don't put Aunt Edna on the roof, and don't tie any dog leashes to the rear bumper of your car.

              That's good advice!

See if the moving company has a rig large enough to include the Camaro. Clear bra may not be effective for large rocks, major road debris, sticks, animals, and other cars (possible accident?) Try www.uship.com and others. My friend paid $600 for a AZ to IL run. For $300 more than a clear bra you'll have no extra mileage, wear, or damage.

I totally agree, if I had a choice and I had the clear bra I would still ship it, too much wear and tear on the car, If you do drive it, better get some soft cotton covers for the seat and condition the leather before you go liberally too !

I am thinking to ship it.

I got hit by road debris on 355 that mushed the plastic on the bottom of the bumper, clear bra on top still intact, and have only driven the car maybe 20 times over the last year because of that, over half of those were to C5G events. I almost stopped driving the car because I am afraid of road debris. It's sad.

Maybe we can have a "cool Camaro" driving class in the Spring? Watch speed, following distance, road choice, etc. :-)

I agree with Steve in that the drive would be awesome to make.....if it was May-September. This time of year, no way.
