  • Exhaust advice

Hello C5G viewers. I'm brand new to the site and I'm looking for some advice. I own a 2012 Camaro SS convertible automatic. I'm looking at the Borla Atak or S-type. I called Borla earlier and the person I spoke to said the Atak is pretty loud and suggested the s-type. I only drive the camaro when it's nice out. Do any of you all have either of these exhausts? Any opinion? I don't plan on installing new headers at this time. I'd just like to get a catback system now. My only concern with the Atak is if it's too loud inside the car that you can't have a conversation. I just love the growl on start up and take off with the Atak system. Sounds fantastic on the web, but doesn't do either system justice. If anyone is close to Kenosha and wouldn't mind me coming over and listening to their exhaust I'd be up for that as well. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Atak is very loud. With an SS, I'd look into Corsa or MBRP. Gives a nice growl on throttle but drone inside the vehicle is minimal to some of the other systems.

      Welcome!
I have the Borla S-type and love it. I considered the Atak but a little too loud for my liking. The S-type sounds nice.

Your best bet is to come out to one of our meets and hear some exhaust in person. I personally have SOLO mach XL catback on my car and I really like the sound. Borla is very popular as well.

The solo exhaust is essentially a muffler delete with J-pipes (j-pipes eliminates exhaust drone) I can hold a conversation in the car without problems.

I am installing long tube headers this weekend (hopefully) and have been told then the solo gets a little on the loud side. I will give my opinion on that when I get them installed. If it is too loud the solo exhaust will be up for sale as I will be going back to OEM exhaust with cutouts.

EDIT: I know the origional post was on borla but I thought I would share my experience with solo.

I had an SLP LM 2 on my 2SS manual trans coupe and it droned so bad in the cabin, I wanted to eat a bullet.

The Borla Touring I put on it made the car quieter on the inside -- to the point where I could actually have conversations with my passengers, hear music and actually think.

This is how a Borla Touring sounds with a TVS2300 blower, Doug Thorley headers and high flo cats

As I mentioned on Facebook, I have the Borla S-type and love it! I plan on adding headers in the future. I will be at Volo and would be glad to let you listen to it. Welcome to the site and looking forward to meeting you at Volo!

Hello, and welcome! i too have a convertible and I was also in the same dilemma two years ago. I installed a flow master American thunder exhaust and soon found out that you can't even use your cell phone while driving! But I delt with it, however it had to go once I supercharged it. Because I am in the automotive industry and go to the SEMA show every year I decided to stop by all the major exhaust manufactures (Borla, Magnaflow, Flowmaster etc.). Each one of them had headphones that you can try on and listen to the exhaust (real cool). I found Borla had (to me) the deepest sound. You dont have to go to SEMA like i did BC I found it more interesting to YouTube your car with the type of exhaust you are interested and there is dozens of postings with all types of exhaust. I ended up choosing the Borla Touring.

I have the ATAK Cat Back with Borla Shorty Headers and a tune with AFM off. The ATAK was not too loud to have a conversation but I did have the infamous drone and it took turning AFM off to get rid of it. My car is no where near too loud....for me. As a matter of fact, I'm installing long tubes and HF cats to get better performance and a little louder. Hopefully it won't be too loud.

With just the ATAK exhaust and nothing else done, you will be able to have a conversation in the car, no problem. The thing that drove me crazy was the drone which you get with a lot of other brand exhausts too. Just turning AFM off will take care of this though, or driving in manual mode.

I'll be at Volo as well if you want to hear what the ATAK system sounds like with Dynatech Long Tubes and HF Cats. Oh, and a decent tune as well.

                            Welcome to the club!
