  • Opinion wanted on employment

Ok guys and gals. Would like your opinion. Was talking with a family member the other day about jobs and I started thinking about mine.

I'm about a year away from getting my bachelors of science in computer informational systems.

I currently have a job doing IT work. Nothing really extensive just time consuming.

I don't see myself learning anything further at this place.

I like the job, I travel a little, enjoy most of the other employees.

Should I keep with it at least till I graduate and see where things go?

I have looked at other opportunities but 97% want a degree and the other 3% pay less.

If it were me in this economy, keep the job until you have something else lined up for sure. if they like you, after you get your college ticket, you may get an offer for a different position in the company. Is it a big company with the ability to move up or a lateral move? Traveling is always a good thing, many times you meet new businesses which may ultimately be your next hire. I would stay with it for now unless a SECURE good opportunity arises somewhere else.
    that's my 2 cents.
You probably need to sit down with an IT recruiter and see if this company is holding you back in your talent or not also.

No real area for moving up. I am the IT department. No one else in the company. When I started there were around 40 employees and about 20-25 computers. Now there are about 175 employees and 80 computers.

Stay with it until you get your degree, remember this job is better than NO job. Don't quit until you have another job, what about a paid internship? Just my thoughts.

Sounds like you have a good situation there. Your Running the show in a company that has grown substantially. Its always a problem when there's no room to move up that's true. that college degree may not mean much to them if you are already doing a great job for them and there is no room to go up. Let's face it, you went to college to make more money so I would wait until you get the degree. sometimes companies will lure you in on promises of what they will pay you after you get the degree and then later say, well the market has changed and we need to adjust both of our expectations, and then they hope you will be happy with sticking around or too afraid of looking elsewhere. One year is not a long time.

As Lawdog says, stick with what you've got until you have something better in hand. If anything, maybe you could push for an assistant or underling that you could have under you. If there isn't already a structure for you to move up, make your own!

Stick with the current job! I have been in transition for 2 years now and if I had to do it all over again I would have never left HP. I just got back in with HP and moving to CA on Thursday, on my own dime. If you can wait for your degree wait and then ask for a raise, document your successes and and do your homework. Look around there are companies hiring, crap I had 2 offers in the last 3 weeks and you know what, I took the offer that I had to move for. I will move now and my family will follow on after school is out. Sometimes we make choices for our own reasons, make the choice for you! Look at the other side though, have 6 months of reserve cash in the bank for all your expenses before jumping ship. I did and used every bit of it up after the company I joined filed for bankruptcy after only being there for 6 months after leaving HP for them and their too good to be offer!.

I lost a lot but at the same time learned so much...PM me if you want my cell number and we can chat about the industry......

Coming from someone who works in IT. Keep the job, get your degree, then find something new. The pay will be much better with the degree.

Another thought on keeping what you have until you graduate. Your next employer will be impressed with you sticking with your current company. It shows dedication to your employer. That's my .02 worth.

Thanks for all the input. It is pretty much exactly what I was thinking and leaning towards.

as for quitting without a job lined up, I would never do that!
