  • Vehicle mileage (used car search)

Ok so I am looking at used vehicles for a winter car again. I don't know why but to me 125k miles on a car seems more then 175k miles on a truck/suv.

Does anyone else have this same perception? Are trucks/suv built to last longer?

I was talking to my brother in law and we were talking solid frame vs uni-body. Think this plays a roll?

By last 2 winter vehicles were Honda's with 148xxx miles and 168xxx miles. All original except for common stuff.

I believe it depends completely on make and model. I have seen Honda's with over 200k miles kicking strong with no issues (I worked at jiffy lube for 3 years)
I have also seen cars with transmission and engine failure under 50k miles due to lack of maintainence. So its very hard to say. But my feelings are I can look at majority of imports that are older with 125k miles and know I could get another 30k out of it no problem. That's why I always look for a Honda or Toyota.

As far as frame design, that only would really impact two things... weight and body stiffness. I don't think it will impact reliability much unless it comes to accidents.

But that's my 2 cents. I guess working on cars and seeing them drive up with 150k-200k on original components make.it easier to have faith.

sent from my galaxy s3. that would explain the errors.

I completely understand the maintenance thing. I think any vehicle can make it a few hundred thousand miles with proper care. Maybe I feel as truck/suv owners take better care of there vehicles? I still see more SUV's/truck's over 200k miles and running strong then i do cars over 150k miles.

Completely agree with the Toyota's. Those things will last you through armagedon ( witch is supposedly coming up the 21st lol ) my uncle works at a toyota dealership and hes seen some with 300k and still kicking good. it also depends on how they took care of the car. if they changed the oil regularly and maintained the thing will last you.

secondly, i have two jeep wranglers (whitch is my second favorite car) and i have a 95 not well maintained when i bought it with 160k miles and messed up about 2k miles in. i bought a second one (01 jeep wrangler) and the guy maintained this really well. still alive and kicking.

short story. Toyota's will last you forever. Take care of your car and it will take care of you

UHG TOYOTA!? lol this is a Camaro forum that is a GM vehicle haha.

In all seriousness tho, this vehicle will be used for work and I do carry a lot of stuff in my car when I go places. With the camaro I would sometimes have to have my passenger seat covered with stuff as well as my back seat and trunk.

I think that is making me lean towards the SUV as well. I don't honestly know if I could enjoy driving a toyota. I know narrow minded.

I love me some S series blazers, but They're not the minimal maintenance type, unfortunately. They tend to eat ball joints and steering components for lunch. And while some improvements were made over the years, just like their big brothers, the valve guides like to wear prematurely and contribute to oil burning, especially at higher mileage.

Each manufacturer has their gems and duds, for sure. I've seen some toyotas that didn't make 100K miles. some of their 4 cyl motors had major oil sludge issues. many are fine though.

if you're looking for a good combo of space and economy (and/or reliability) can look around for a GM H-body sedan (bonneville, lesabre, park avenue) I'd be looking at a 97 or newer. There's oodles of trunk and interior space.

Then again, if it's just space and not economy, tahoes, suburbans, etc should be widely available

                          I agree.....
I have a 96 Blazer that has 120K on it. My dad bought it brand new and has done a good job on maintenance. He gave it to me for my daughter to drive three years ago. I've had to replace a few engine parts, water pump, compressor, but it pretty much looks like new and has many years of like left.

I agree with Toasty too. My dad's current vehicle I drive him around in is a 2002 Lesabre. This thing has a ton of room and rides like a dream. 65K on it. Has original battery in it too. I may replace it this winter.

I wanna say the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump were replaced on my 96 jimmy at about 125-130K, before I got rid of it at 150K. Get ready

Oh man, I hope not. I just replaced the fuel pump in my 98 Trans AM because the pressure regulator was only putting out 34 PSI. Should be 60. The car had been hard to start for the last year so I replaced it before it left me stranded. The installed AC Delco pump cost me $1200.
