I recall a recent Tech Support story, relayed from my supervisor. A tech support person got a call, and the lady said that she could not get the internet to work on her laptop. He attempted to have the lady check some basic settings, but she insisted that she could not find what he was talking about. She also stated that she couldn't find her VPN or other applications. Took him awhile to figure out that her son had taken the laptop and installed Windows 8 preview on it.
I see it from an IT perspective, too. Windows 7 really wasn't a big deal. As I explained it to our end users, is that it works very much like XP, but a few things are moved around. The bigger hurdle was the change from Office 03 to Office 07.... the Ribbon interface STILL throws our users for a loop, the Office button instead of the normal File menu.... So what does MS Do, after this change, and people are starting to get it? THEY GO BACK to File in Office 2010 ...we've got at least until net year before that rolls out, though I suspect.
I am pretty sure that enterprise deployments will be able to go back to the standard Windows 7 style interface, if they so choose- there's a tool to let users switch back and forth at will on the consumer preview. Flipping isn't but a registry change.
The Metro interface is really optimized for touch screen devices, I can't wholeheartedly think that MS will force enterprise clients to use it on normal Desktops... but hey, it is Microsoft. LOL
I'm in IT as well - Our "technical router" (secretary) installed it on his laptop - he tried using it, and couldn't handle it. There's a lot of issues with the built in email client not being able to handle exchange 2010, few other things, but he re-imaged back to 7 like 2 days later.
I don't quite get installing it on an in-use machine.... I think my supervisor, etc would have quite an issue if I were to do that to my machine and be unable to perform my job fuctions.
