I don't get that kind of thought -- every smartphone is a radio in your pocket -- radio is truly limited, and always will be, but an internet device is a mini computer with limitless options.

Just stream it to your car speakers -- works great, wired or wireless. I tend to listen to streamed content more than radio these days -- MUCH more flexibility of choice.

I was doing that for a long time, but here's the thing. Just doing that, I never learn about new bands. Since the death of alternative in Chicago, we are left high and dry in Chicago-land. This way I can hear new songs and bands and expand my ipod library.

Well, for the old farts, the original alternative is still around. XRT!

The only reason that I renewed XM was for the higher-quality audio without using up the bandwidth from my phone.

Q101 plays new bands... Maybe some other streaming services stagnate or get repetitive, like a Pandora channel over time...

Gotta love an unlimited data plan. To me XM is too limited, and as for Q101 going back on the air over FM would likely be as an HD Radio sub-channel...

well there are 4 major limitations to using my smart phone...

the first and most important is that I don't get consistent 3G coverage on my drive home through some residential neighborhoods

Second, streaming over bluetooth compresses the audio to the point that you lose your higher and lower frequencies and the audio quality suffers noticeably.

Third, you can't easily change channels with the smart phone like you can with the radio and keep your eyes on the road.

Fourth, using the aux cable is annoying and clutters up the center console area. I can't leave the phone in the armrest due to aforementioned signal issues.

I can't wait until Pandora and other internet streaming apps are available on the car that I have because that will be the day I never listen to broadcast radio again. Until then it's a USB stick and FM radio for me.

FYI, for my setup, Bluetooth provides much higher quality audio than a wired, Aux connection.

                            1. That is rarely a problem in my experience, may also be cell provider specific, and if your device can fallback to slower networks, i.e. LTE->HPSA->Edge Although there's a spot on Rt. 59 near Barrington Rd. that always seems to have issues... If there's coverage issues, you have to notify the cell companies so they are aware.

                            2. I believe this depends on the Bluetooth standard version used, i.e. latest is 4.0, but most devices do not support this. A2DP which is what does this streaming and also has options for codecs, so depending on the implementation, you can get the fidelity you want, ilke AAC (same as which XM Radio uses):
Bluetooth profile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

                            3. This really depends on the app you are using for integration, some like Livio allow more integration than others, so YMMV. Pandora for instance allows me to skip songs via steering wheel controls.

                            4. I use a USA Spec dock connector to a ProClip mount on the dash near the top of the dash -- no big deal once the device is in the cradle, and don't have to take my eyes off the road for a glance, just like the speedo. Putting a device like this in the armrest is really impractical, IMHO.

I think the limitation regarding the steering wheel controls and Pandora is the connection modes available for Android. If you have an iPhone, I hear you can stream audio via the USB, so maybe you can also control the pandora app... who knows. But with my android, you get "mass storage" or some other media connect mode that doesn't do anything besides stream the mp3s already on the device... The only way to get audio out of Pandora is with the headphone jack or bluetooth on my droid x.

And regarding the bluetooth standard. I believe the Camaro A2DP interface does not give any user-selectable options regarding codecs... so I'm still SOL there.
