  • Winter beater problem

    Car: 96 Saturn sl1.
    Mileage 151k

When I bought the car I replaced the battery, put 4 new tires on it and finally got the front brakes done yesterday.

Car idles rough but has not given me a problem starting in 2 months.

Get the car from the shop yesterday and it had a hard start (blamed it on the cold wether). I drove it twice and both times hard start.

This Morning go to run to the store and it just clicks. Put jumper cables to it for 10 seconds fires right up.

Go back out to start it and the starter is working. Doesn't seem to be fighting for power but no start.

Smells like fuel so I check spark and I have spark.....

I'm lost where to go from here.

Alternator? Don't discount the battery, i've had a new battery go bad once before. It was from Sears, had it checked out and they gave me a new one.

I had one from Sears too and the post broke inside the battery. Had to get a new one.

Looked at the cables they didn't look bad. Bought the battery from autozone. Will have to check N see if I can get it tested.

I'm sure autozone will check it, probably for free.

This is too funny. I have been going through this all morning with Janet's car. She called from the Post Office to tell me her car was dead and wouldn't start. I had to go jump it then took it to AZ to check things out.

Take it to Autozone and have them run their computer check on not only the battery but the alternator too. Good luck.

I just sent J over to Sears for a new battery since she likes theirs instead of AZ.

The drag strip is like sniffing glue, it's cheap, it's a decent buzz, it doesn't last long and they are all the same.
Road racing is like China White Heroin, the buzz is stronger, the high lasts for hours, it's extremely addictive and they are all different.
I can't wait for my Track next fix.

Heh. Unless something has changed, both Sears and AZ use JCI as battery supplier. Hope it's all better, this cold sux dealing with batteries.

Yea but it says Sears on it.

They did say alternator is going bad and noticed the valve cover is cracked. There is a freakin' hole in it for goodness sakes!!! How the hell does that happen? And where the hell do you find one of those for a 2001 Hyundai Elantra? I have been searching the web to no avail. I found one on Ebay but I kinda want one local.
