The new iPhone app has pretty amazing audio fidelity -- no crappy downgraded audio unless you pay nonsense!

My cousin is on the management team for the new Q101 -- if anyone has any suggestions, let me know and I will get them to the source.

I dunno, legacy radio is becoming outmoded -- I listen to internet radio via iPhone mostly now when driving -- and rarely the radio anymore...

Eventually it will all be data and radio as we know it will likely fade into history. XM (& HD Radio) is essentially this already, it is no different than a radio app on your smartphone, except that you receive it via satellite instead of cellular towers... HD Radio just piggybacks digital data over the existing OTA bandwidth.

I really think XM and HD Radio are transitional fads that will result in internet radio being the standard.

Until "internet radio" is integrated into cars, etc, and cost free, FM radio isnt going anywhere.

The key is an unlimited data plan, which is the reason this works so well for me...

Right.. but one, not all carriers offer an unlimited plan, and two, even for those that can get unlimited data from their carrier... that's a SMALL number... there's a LARGE number of people that don't have smart phones, and larger number that have smart phones with a small data plan. There is a large chunk of the population that isn't going to pay for radio... just like there is a chunk of people that won't pay for TV either.

^ I know Sprint & T-Mobile currently offer unlimited data plans... AT&T & Verizon had unlimited data plans and if you got them, you could get grandfathered in with future phone upgrades.

Smart phones really are the future, I doubt you will see many plain mobile phones going forward -- even the basic phones are adding more and more smartphone-like features. I would say iPhone and Android phones for example, really aren't even smart phones, but mini-computers...

People pay for XM plans, but if you think about it, an unlimited data connection on a smart phone is actually WAY more useful/practical.

Right... I said not all carriers have unlimited plans... right now. I have one of Verizon's unlimited 4G plans... but you can't get it anymore. The saturation of smartphones is growing, but it is going to take a LONG time for feature phones to be eliminated. There are just too many older users and those that can't afford smart phones and their data plans. .... so what, would vehicle manufacturers not put radios in a car? not likely. I get what you are saying, that the future is going to be different, but I don't see that happening in the next 5 years... maybe not even 10

^ Yea, some of us are the early adopters and see where it's going...

I see the radio/entertainment/NAV system in cars as going modular -- right now, an iPhone serves me better than anything in cars that interest me. Something like an iPad + 3G is even more ideal -- either one you can take with you too. It would be great to see user-friendly replaceable radio/entertainment/NAV systems -- module like a dock. OR, the car may become more of a receiver from such a device, kind of like Apple TV does AirPlay Mirroring now... This is an early version of the direction GM seems to be going with their system with the connectivity today (Bluetooth/USB)
Apple - Apple TV - AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring

I agree that data plans are overpriced, BUT the way cellular is going is that future LTE Advanced is *ALL data*, so voice is just VoIP, so separate plans will start to go away, although you will still need an ITSP for VoIP termination to legacy phones.

Next Malibu will have a hot spot option, and from there on most chevy's will have it. Not sure what the plans will be like for the car to be hooked up, but I bet at first it will be pricey.

I heard the new Cadilac nav screens will now have some technology like I phone and I pad
With things like the pinch motion to reduce or enlarge what's on screen. Not sure if eventually they will be removable but I do believe they are definatly headed in that direction with technology.

That's the CUE (Cadillac User Experience) system. Pretty awesome looking.

Here's proof supporting my theory that XM is a fad, it's just another internet streaming system, and does NOT require a Satellite Antenna! See:
App Store - SiriusXM Internet Radio

Here's that CUE Tony mentions, they're using some of the same tech Apple reportedly is (Nuance) for Siri (well, they bought that company). Video:

Cadillac unveils CUE infotainment system for connected driving excitement in 2012 (video) -- Engadget

I dunno, the screen seems a little too small, closer to iPad size would be ideal, IMHO:
