  • How strict ?

Is the tech at GLD? You guys that are running low 12s, do you have driveshaft safety loops? Looking at their page I see they are NHRA sanctioned, and was thinking about going tonight but don't want to make the trip only to be turned away.

    Thanks!

I've yet to be teched like that, or see anyone else be teched.

I think as long as you're on DRs you're fine....full on slicks mandate a loop no matter what time you're running.

Good luck out there and have fun!!!!!

You are going to get in line to tech, pull around, shut the car off. The tech guy will put the wrist band on your wrist and write your # on your windows. He will then ask you if you have a helmet because he knows you will be running at least in the 13's.... He won't even look at the car.....

Been to GLD way too many times....

That was, to the letter, my exact experience on Monday.. I was all prepared to explain the catch can, the blower set up, show him my overflow bottle, etc..

Nope.. Took my card, wrote my number, asked if I had a helmet (didn't even look at it) and then slapped on the bracelet.

I'll tell you now -- the end of the track comes up on you quickly. I know I was on the brakes rather hard to stop after the traps.

Get a slower car, the track won't end too quickly!

I can tell you that the track was sticky when I went on Monday.. If you're on DRs you should hook well if it's prepped the same again.. My issue is simply exceeding the PZ0s ability to stick w/o the nannies on.

though -- be very careful on your stock axles + if you're an early VIN, watch for the Tranny Output shaft.

                  Thank you!

What do you consider an early VIN? 2G1FT1EW3A9191854

I'm guessing mine would be okay

You should be OK and not included with the defect -- I believe all the ones with broken outputs were 25,000 and below

Tally of broken output shaft VIN's - 2011 Camaro ZL1 Camaro Forum / Camaro SS and V6 Forums - Camaro5.com

--- but, I defer to the guys more in the know with the lower VINs.

                    you're like me and have a higher VIN at 191,854.. I'm a 208,809

....but, that's not to say you still can't break stuff.. obviously -- =) We're in the same boat on DRs + High Launch Drop + Sticky Track = Carnage Roulette

I'm just doing a controlled release from 3500, rolling with full clutch release and then rolling in to the throttle... I personally wouldn't do a drop launch on DRs in an M6 with this car's weight on a stock tranny.. The A6 guys have it better in that regard with their TCs.. The one time I'd prefer to have a slushbox is on the 1/4 mi.. Those guys have been getting crazy times with F/I, DRs and minimal suspension mods.

                      Thanks for the info!

and I keep telling myself i'll take it easy.. but my buddy is bringing his gt500... part of me is feeling the go big or go home attitude coming on...

If I can go easy on it and manage a mid 11 pass I'd be thrilled, I feel the setup has what it takes down the road (with axles and some suspension goodies on a tire) to run a 10.9xx

I don't think I've ever met you and I don't know your driving abilities -- so, forgive me if I overstep here.. but..

Launching the 5th Gen is rough with a stock six speed. It's more an Art Form than a Science. (yes, I know there's tons of Science data out there). With the power you and I are at, it's even more interesting (well, more so for me on the PZ0s w/o DRs.. heh).. I'd say look at Ranger Acceleration.. That site has some great information on it..

I've never launched on DRs before -- but, from what I see about them, it's not a magic pill and has its own set of "getting set in your ways", they're just different.

If you would like, you can borrow my stock axles and take them up with you... that way, if you snap an axle on the track, you're not stuck with a tow bill if you can just swap it out there -- we could work out the purchase of them later if you're going to keep them -- or just return them back to me with the promise that you're not going to race on them.. It's up to you.. I live in Chicago, so I don't know if that's convenient for you before going to the track.

I don't know how I feel about throwing on the DRs just yet.. Maybe.. But, I know there's a little more in my stock tire if I launch a little better on a day not freaking 92° F out... I have enough power in the car now to really tear it up if I do something wrong at the track and I'm not comfortable with my driving skills just yet.. I really want the 11s time slip I know this car is capable of, but I'm OK waiting a little longer for it.

As for the GT500... Beware the Live Axle. With your mods I'd say you're close to #s with each other -- but, I have no idea what, if any mods your buddy has done... But, that Live Axle will make it an easier launch.. IRS is interesting for sure.

You're absolutely correct! getting these things moving is not at all easy; and I've never had track time with such a high horsepower car, though I have had a fair amount of track time in my previous cars.. It's really up in the air as to how I'll handle it. I've not yet ruled out the possibility that I'll come home with nothing better than a low 12.xx pass. Where are you located? not sure if we're hitting GLD or 41 yet.

With a car like this you have to sacrifice something to launch properly if you have weak links; I would prefer to feather the clutch a bit more than shocking the drivetrain with a tall drop.

Tell me about it.. I had a 2002 Navy Blue Metallic Trans AM (Non-WS6), manual 6, SLP LID, Free RamAir Mod, Lou's Short Stick and SLP Loud Mouth exhaust..

                            On the stock 245/45/16s I ran a best of 13.18 @ 108 MPH that was with a 2.2 60'

That was a beast of a car in mostly stock form.

Though, it's funny because I'd get ragged on by other Trans Ams because it wasn't a WS-6 and was "just a Trans Am" like there was some almighty difference between the TA/WS6/Firehawk that amounted to huge gains.

                            I'll PM you our location

Hah! What was even funnier was when you'd tell a clueless person that its the same longblock as a c5.. "no way. why would someone buy a vette if it was the same" ignorance is bliss for some

                              Thank You!
