  • Garage Door Fail

So I get a text from my wife tonight, seems that a friend stopped by our house to drop something off, before we got home. He found the garage door open, which I swear I had pushed the button in the car to close it this morning. He tried to close it... and he said "it didn't sound good" ... so after a bit of disassembly, I have this:

notice the off-centeredness of the output shaft, a bad bearing to blame:

Thanks to my friend Google, parts are on the way, should be able to have it fixed up early next week.

hey, on the bright side, I know how to disassemble a garage door opener

You sure it's just the bearing, are those gears still good? The cheapo PLASTIC GEARS on my old opener got trashed causing it to fail -- of course the company is out of business and no parts were available, so had to pony up for a brand new one. Guess what, the brand new one ALSO has cheapo PLASTIC GEARS!

Supposedly you have to get a commercial one for non-plastic gears. I think the plastic gears are for safety, so they break before causing too much damage...

Yes the gear is toast, it was caused by the bad bearing. The plastic/nylon gears are indeed there to be the weak spot. Saves the motor from burning up in a case like this.
