  • Soldering in a replacement LED

I took my Instrument Panel Circuit Board out and tested my LED's. The CEL LED is bad and needs to be replaced. I need to get this done ASAP so I can pass emissions already. (This car is driving me crazy!!!)

Is it difficult to do this? I realize it takes about 2 minutes and the LED costs less than $1, but I am very nervous about doing this. I guess I should just go ahead and do it if I can't think of someone who can. Is there a master solderer person near Lansing lol? How the heck do you go about finding such a person?

TonyNo is the resident electronic guru so maybe he can help. PM him or maybe he'll see this and chime in.

Damn. Can you get a tight shot of the LED in question?

PLCC2 size 5050 is what I was told. I would guess since it's the CEL it would have to be Amber colored.

It is the one that is in the center at like 9:30 on a clock dial. I think it says "L...something 850" lol. Sorry this is why I am afraid to solder, I can't see small things anymore. Surprised I can even use the bathroom...yes that was a joke...a bad one.

Hrmmm. That's going to be tricky... but hopefully, beyond that, you did mark the where the needles were when ON before removal?

LD850 looks like a PLCC4 (4 leads). 5050 would be square, that looks rectangular. Can you measure the width and length?

It might be. I do know that the PLCC2 works fine, when placed on it's side. That's what all the folks at C5 use. I can try to measure it, but I don't know if I can see it lol.

Ok...looks like .5 for sure, and .45 the other way...? It is more than .4 and less than .5.

Well the car was off so wouldn't all the needles be far left?

Ehh, only maybe. I'm guessing that the shafts weren't keyed though.

Of all the instructions I have seen on removing needles, the instructions are to take a picture/mark with tape where the needles are when running/warmed up. then remove. Maybe the 5th gen ones are different.
