  • Can't pass emissions

Well I knew this day would come. Emissions test...failed.

Error code: P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position not Plausible

No one seems to be able to figure it out either. No idea what to do now.

        I can fix that...

First step is to check both cam and crank sensor to make sure they are ok and functional.

Worst case scenario I can assist in a more "technical" way

          Full Story:

The original work, including the installation of the LS9 Cam was done at Nickey. Car drove fine for awhile, then mysteriously went into limp mode. The error code P0016 first showed up at that time. Nickey took the car back and replaced a sensor, and car drove fine for a bit more. Code came back again.

Somewhere around this time I noticed the CEL was gone. Did not, and still does not, come on at startup.

At that point I figured I needed a new set of eyes on the problem so I took the car to Speed INC. They re-tuned the car and said that they could find no evidence of the error. Car ran great, so I was stupid and for some reason did not think to hit the ONSTAR button and have them run a remote diagnostic. I figured the new tune fixed the issue.

Nope. I received my emailed ONSTAR report 2 days ago and to my surprise the code is still there. This is where it gets strange. So either Speed INC missed the code, or the code is coming in and out. (They also said they have no idea how to recover the CEL on the dash.)

So today, just for shits and giggles I took the car for the emissions test and it failed due to the P0016 code.

So that makes (2) performance shops that can not fix this issue, and I am left with significantly less $$$ and a car that can't pass the emissions test.

To be quite frank, this really stinks.

If you already looked at the two sensors AND the wires leading to them, you already know what the next step is, TIMING CHAIN May be a bit stretched ! I am no expert but that's what I would suspect.

It would not be customary to need to have a car retuned because of single DTC.

This Camaro did have electrical issues prior to any work being started by us and the customer was aware of it......whether or not this has any bearing, I do not know.

When we ran the car on the dyno, along with two rigorous test drives one with the customer. it ran flawlessly with no DTCs displayed. When we were informed of a potential 'Cam Sensor" issue, we picked the car up and replaced a faulty cam sensor, at our expense. (Yes, electrical parts can just go bad at times. not common, but it does happen)

We were not informed of any other DTC issues and Mike decided to have another shop retune his car, which is certainly his prerogative.

The DTC is not showing / triggering the check engine light/codes, based on the info he has provided....so it may just need some cycling (driving the car) in order to get it out of the system and pass emissions. It may be that simple.

We would never leave anyone hanging and stand behind our work. If and when there may be an issue all we can do is apologize for the inconvenience and fix it.

There are literally hundreds of our tunes / builds driving around the Midwest with no issues.

I have the Nickey Stage I cam, no cats, and headers. I passed emissions last month.

                            I've passed and I didn't have kitties.

If you want I could put you in touch with a tuner, to see if there is a tune related issued. I'm not sure if you need to do a crank relearn or not, or whether it can be done via HPT.

There is a bit of an urban myth about needing a certain number of keyed starts after a reflash before you can test emissions. Not true. I have flashed it right before I got in line at emissions.

                              John,

It's not a myth per se. Generally if there was a certain DTC, which was cleared it may take some cycles to get it to where its no longer able to be read from inside the computer.

We have seen "many" cars without cyts pass emissions.
