  • Tire Recommendation Please?

I think it's time to get rid of the Goodyear Eagle F1's. I have the ZL1 5 spokes and am looking for the same size tire setup - F: 285/35ZR20, R:305/35ZR20

Maybe some of you with ZL1's or 1LE's that had the Goodyear's and switched to something else can chime in. I'm probably looking at a summer tire for sure. I like the Goodyears in that they seem to be very soft and provide a good ride. I'm just wondering if there isn't something better. My car is not a daily driver but it gets driven on the weekend and I can put a weeks worth of miles on them in one weekend.

With 600+HP, is there a street tire that would hook up better than the other? I'm not a frequent drag racer, but if I want to go to the track it would be nice to know I have somewhat of a chance for traction. I know I should have another set of tires/wheels for drag racing but I don't have room to store them and also have trouble justifying them for one or two times a year.

I've done some searching on the site and found a few posts. Looks like Michelin Pilot Super Sports or Pirelli's may be the best all around summer tire but want to consider others as well. With that, any thoughts?

    Good morning!

The day you rid yourself of those Goodyears will be the best day of your life with the Camaro. Those tires are horrible in the cold (below 70), dangerous in the rain, and not so great in the dry.

Back in the day most of the expensive sportscars, everything from Porsche 911's to BMW M5's, etc, came with Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. They're great tires but they're also quite pricey. When Michelin introduced the Pilot Super Sport (PSS) a year or so ago they improved upon the PS2 in every way AND they're substantially less expensive than the PS2s to boot!

The PSS are available in the front 285/35 size but not in the rear 305/35 size so you'd need to run a 315/35, which is only 1% larger in circumference it shouldn't be a big deal as long as they clear (and at only a centimeter wider I'd imagine they will, but check with your tire store / tire rack to be sure). BONUS: extra centimeter of traction

    Hope that helps!

I've read good things about the Michelins on camaro5, what do you know about the Hankook Ventus R-S3's or the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A w/UNI-T? I'm a new ZL1 owner and those GY are loud and pick up every freakin pebble on the road! plus I break'em loose all the time...

I haven't noticed the GY's being loud but that's probably because of my exhaust.

They are like fly Paper and pick up every rock/pebble on the road. That's one thing I hate about them, along with no traction in the colder temps. However, this may be the case with all or most summer tires, I don't know.

Michelon Pilot Super Sport...no need to look anywhere else. They drive great. They hook up great (for a summer street tire), even at 600+ hp. I would not waste any time considering anything else. Nothing else comes even close.

What rubs? The tire on the fender or wheel liner? My car is lowered with 1" BMR springs. I have no issues whatsoever.

I'm wondering the same thing. Mine is lowered 1.5"

Mike, what size tires do you have on the rear? I'm wondering if a 295 will work okay.

I found the problem on C5. The guy had 295's on the front and had a slight rub when he encountered a dip in the road at highway speed. 285's in front should not be a problem and is the way I would go anyway.

Still wondering if the 295 on the rear would be okay, but prefer a 315 for sure.

Reason I asked was there's a new set for sale on the C5. 285's and 295's.

Maybe Garrett will chime in on the sizes and whether there are any issues rubbing. Garrett, you there?

I also saw something on camaro5 about 315s rubbing in a similar circumstance as the 295s in front....dip in the road

the thread said that when they hit a dip in the road at a decent speed it carved into the tire abit. for the 295s in front. saw somewhere else on camaro5 that someone said the same thing about 315s in the back. they sound like a much better tire for the ZL1 but I wish they made them in the same sizes as the GYs. maybe by the time I'm ready for tires they will although the way the GYs break loose that may be soon

I have 275's in the front, and 295's in the back. There was a guy on C5 that knows exactly what fits on our cars. I can't remember his handle over there. He knows every tire, every rim, every offset, and everything about clearances. I am trying to remember his handle over there but I am coming up blank. I probably have paperwork at home someplace, since he was the one that put my setup together. I will look if I ever get home. (Looks like I'm stuck again on a 16 hour shift)

P.S. Right now I am parked on 31st and LSD...enjoying the "scenery". The lake and the boats are nice too.

It's all about the right combination of offset of wheel in combination with the tire width.
315 will work just fine with the right wheel offset. But you will chew up the sides of the tire and possibly damage fender with the wrong offset wheel.

I have stock ZL1 5 spoke rims and lowered 1.5". My 285F/305R Goodyear's have never rubbed at any bump in the road or anything else for that matter. Garrett, in your opinion, will the 285F/295R work okay or should I go with the 315 rear? I like more of a rounded off tire than a squared off look. That's why I'm leaning toward the 295 rear since I believe the Michelin PSS is typically wider than the Goodyear's. I welcome a price from you as well if you will PM me. Thanks for your help!
