  • Amsoil vs Mobil 1

I was referred to Amsoil by a friend of mine that is a mechanic, I looked into it and it seems you can go longer between oil changes..... But for the price difference is it really better than Mobil 1???

Amsoil and Redline are the two best from what I've gathered and 5K miles between changes. I even had one mechanic tell me that I could go 10K and not think twice about it with Redline. Not sure I would do that. One oil change a year usually works for me since I don't put many miles on ole Inferno. Amsoil in there right now.

Last time I bought Mobil 1, I had to get "Extended Performance" because the regular Mobil 1 synthetic did not meet the GM4718M GM Standard. I think Pennzoil Ultra would be another good choice and meets the GM Standard.

Even using Mobil1 or Amsoil/Redline/Royal Purple etc (Yes, Freddie the normal Mobil1 does meet GM4718M, has for many years ) Most users would not recommend going more than 4 or 5 thousand miles on a change, and definitely do not rely on the oil life monitor...

Must not have had my reading glasses that day then. Seemed like I remember there was a time that the GM rating was not on the Mobil 1 bottle. Oh well...my bad.

I suppose it might not have been listed on the bottle, but it's on the list online. Doesn't matter too much, but it might save ya a couple bucks next time around.

Did not know that about oil life monitor... I thought it is set at a mileage ... Like 3000 or 5000 miles

I found this while looking for GM4718M oil

This is what i prefer Royal Purple/Amsoil/Mobile1 (in that order)
I have never used Amsoil oil but i have Royal Purple in my differential
Mobile1 is the easiest to find, then Royal Purple
but i don't see Amsoil to much on shelf's
Currently i have paid for 3 years oil changes at the dealer which they put in Mobile1.
I only pay a few dollars over the cost of the oil and filter if i did it myself.

I use Amsoil in my truck and Camaro and have been doing that before I got the Camaro. We stock Amsoil at Len's Ace in Addison and have for a long time and that's what they use. The owner races at the Grove in a '64 Plymouth Wagon and a '64 Plymouth Black Coupe, Nostalgia Series. Both run in the mid to high 8's. I do change my oil twice a year on the Camaro and I go about 5k on my truck, give or take.

I wonder if there is a newer list....maybe Amsoil and Royal Purple would be on it.

The list likely will never be updated, since GM has introduced the dexos specifications, and recommends using it in all vehicles.

Mobil 1 is not a bad "oil", it is just not necessarily the best for a high performance application. It is NOT 100% true synthetic oil.

We use Amsoil in our daily drivers, trucks, bikes and Hi-Performance Builds.

I have heard from a friend of mine that if you are running a aggressive cam that you should add a zinc additive to the oil you Are using..... Never heard of it in modern engines with newer lifters ... Just older engines... Is this true????
