Advice on brakes please...

I have a set of stock rotors with approximately 5000 miles on them, AND a set of stock pads with approximately 8000 miles on them. Front pads have the roller skates on them so no squealing. They have been sitting in my garage since May of this year. Make me an offer.

cindy y did you not let me know about a brake issue? with a extra garage and a roter cutter I would done the work free you buy the pads and rotors if ness labor FREE!

Do the brakes yourself - there's plenty of help here and online. Have someone cut the rotors - (as long as they're not slotted or drilled). Spend the extra $ on quality pads that improve stopping performance and that reduce the dust...unless you like wiping the wheels off every 20 miles :-(

Agreed! Except almost 50k miles is a lot of miles on a set of stock rotors. I would really urge to purchase new. Just not that crazy dealer price.

I changed to Hawk Performance Ceramic's (yellow box) because they were reported to have less dust. My experience has been that they are not much better than the stock pads. Brake dust drives me crazy, especially on black rims.

Heck you don't need brakes. You need a parachute for your car.

this must be rocket science ? just buy caliper covers and this will reduce break dust on any wheel big time da!!!!!!!!!!!

caliper covers are only helpfull if you have a v6, the v8 have Brembo's, brakes covers may not fit over them.

I agree with Scotch Man - pull the chute when you need to stop. For safety, please turn on the 4 ways while you repack for the next light. :-)

btw something like 70% of the brakes are used in the front first so you noise might be coming from there.
the pads have a squealer on them to let you know it is time to change them
when the pads get low the metal squealer piece touces the rotor making a high pitch squeal. if you use the pad for too long after that then the metal from the pad backing become the brake and then gouges the rotor. If the gouge are to deep then the rotor is trash.
most times you should be able to cut the rotor once before it is trash.
there is also some paste the you can apply to the pads to help stop the noise if your pad are in good condition. (pad need to be removed) O'Reilly's have new pad for $20 for the front. with the cost of the paste and the cut you are looking at less then $100 if you take them off your self. $30 to $40 with no cut. i would look at the pads you should see them though your wheel. post a pic.

my dad had a squeaking issues on his xl7 and changing the pads and putting paste on, stopped the issues.

O I forgot about the brake weight do you still have them? (or roller skates)

Keep in mind, that, as I understand it, current rotors are not made to be turned down like old rotors were. No extra meat there.
