  • Chicago Window Tint Law Changing

    Finally!

    More info here.

Long story short.. State window tinting laws were amended to ensure that laws across the state (including Chicago) were consistent with the rest of IL. That hasn't been the case for years.

    Great info! Thank GlobalWarmer!

Sooooooo, as long as it is a 5% tint? Can a Tint guy jump in on this. What is than the legal tint to place on our front windows?

Legal tint for front windows: "(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle with any sign, poster, window application, reflective material, nonreflective material or tinted film upon the front windshield, except that a nonreflective tinted film may be used along the uppermost portion of the windshield if such material does not extend more than 6 inches down from the top of the windshield."

General: 35% all the way around seems like the most likely legal approach. That's how I'm interpreting it anyway.. need a Tint expert like SSToDo said!

I'd like some opinions on two other items if anyone has any thoughts on them....
      1) Additional Attention - What are peoples thoughts on getting additional attention from police with tinted windows vs not tinted. 35% certainly isn't over the top but I've heard some folks present the 'but then they'll have a reason to pull you over.. to check if it's legal tint' argument but is that reality?

      2) Stock Tint - Stock tint is 70% right? I'm assuming that's in the glass itself (?). If one put 35% tint on the stock windows are we actually BELOW 35% then (and therefore technically / potentially illegal)? Not sure how that works..

35 percent over 4 years so far. Never any issue with police.

If our windows are 70% tint then if we put 50% tint over it it should produce 35% tint. btw your port hole windows can be 5% or at least they use to.

and if you put reflective tint on your percentage need to be 50% not 35%

and if you tint you back windows then it's 30% all around

There is a 5% variance allowed

btw section c says fuzzy dice are illegal.

BTW the tint issues were with Chicago not Illinois
they had a law the allows the Chicago officer to ticket you if it looked like it was tinted more. even though it was tinted less. I think this law supersedes that issue.

I think that was tightly coupled to the other windows.

Looks like the last paragraph will take out what we call "Home Rule" attempts that some cities do like Chicago to make their own laws to limit more then the state law. it basically states that this law controls and any attempt to utilize home rules to limit more will not be allowed from my reading of the statute.

I think you've hit on the updated portion of the law. When the state allowed tint on the windows adjacent to the driver and passenger a few years back ( You may have 35% on the adjacent sides and all rear windows, but if you have darker on the rear windows, you may not have any tint on windows adjacent to driver and passenger) - the home rule part was left out, and Chicago and a few other municipalities decided to enforce their own (old state rules) anyway, no matter if you lived in the city or not. This change fixes that home rule issue.

My nephew got a ticket where he attends college (Chicago State Univ.). The car was parked on the street and the police stopped and put the ticket on his windshield. My brother ended up removing the tint. This all happened a couple months ago, so he'll really be happy when I tell him about the law change.
