  • Rear Differential Fluid

Hello all, I am trying to expand my knowledge on rear differential fluid for my 2012 SS with manual transmission. Chevrolet Performance GM Synthetic Axle Lubricant 89021677 with friction modifier 992694 vs Royal Purple 01300 Max Gear 75W-90 High Performance Synthetic Gear Oil with friction modifier additive. Any thoughts or other options will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My personal opinion is to stay stock. Go with GM fluids. Especially at your power levels.

For the rear end, the only reason to look for any "high end" fluids are if you plan on road racing a ton. But for daily driving and even 1/4 mile driving. Stock fluids are great.

Next year I will be running a ZL1 rear end with GM fluids and will be pushing upwards of 1000whp.

sent from my galaxy s3. that would explain the errors.

I just swithced back to GM fluids after running Royal Purple for 18 months. So the 18 months was GM then 18 months of Royal Purple. No issues. used the car for 1/4 mile and 18,000 miles of driving.

Everyone has their own potion or formula.

We use Amsoil with the GM friction modifier.

Odd thing, just went to the Chevy dealer to buy the GM rear differential fluid and the parts department told me I did not have to add the modifier because fluid was a synthetic. So I stopped by the service department to get a quote to have them change the differential fluid and included in the quote was the modifier.

Modifier is most definitely required. I suggest asking a different tech or parts guy.

Some synth fluids come with a modifier in them so no additional additives are needed.

Don't think that was the case since it was on the quote, but the fluid I'm running states specifically to not add anything.

Even the Amsoil requires some friction modifier to keep the rear from clicking.

What you read is not alawys accurate. Practical experience helps a bunch.

I spoke directly to the company's internal staff and got the OK from them and then beat on it at a track. It's perfectly fine.

When I rebuilt my rear end (due to shattering my spider gears) the fluid I got specifically said on the bottle that no modifier was included.

this was well over a year ago, so its possible they might produce a special fluid with the additive included now???

Mine specifically stated it was included and to not use more.

I have other mechanics in agreement

Not trying to start anything, just stating that there are some out there that come with it included in the mix.

Oh no that's Good info. Things can change. So it sounds like they got a mixture now.
