  • transmission clunking.

Alright C5G I need your help. Let me tell you the whole story. I have a 2010 camaro 2SS M6 as some of you know and I took it to the track last week. I had a couple good runs but on my last run I ended up getting wheel hop when I launched. I let off as soon as I noticed it and thought it was fine but to be on the safe side I just cruised through the traps no more then 80-85 mph. On my way back I noticed it didn't sound exactly right. At first you could here a slight clunking noise but just today I dropped my friend off at his house and the sound grew really loud. I had to get a tow back to my house fearing it would break down on me on my way back.

    Symptoms:

1 loud clunk/knock followed by 2 smaller clunks/knocks all equal time apart.

Does not make a difference if the clutch is depressed or what gear its in.

Makes the sound only when driving, does not make sound when just sitting still

The sound speeds up/slows down depending if im speeding up/slowing down.

Sounds like it is coming from the transmission.

I was going to drive to Maryland next week but it looks like I am going to be flying. I would appreciate any help at all figuring out what this noise is.

Does the noise get worse if you accelerate harder compared to normal driving... I ask because I had a clunk about 2 months after I got my car and I was told my driveshaft fell out of balance- occurred after some wheel hop as well. They blamed it on a bolt coming loose. Another symptom I had was my shifter would shake alot and the sound sounded like it was hitting almost under my butt. Hope this helps, and whatever it is I wish you a fast recovery.

That pretty much fits my description exactly with the exception of the shifter shakeing. Was the bolt just loose or did it fal out?

Former club member DarkSS had driveshaft bolt issues, also.(LS3/Manual as well) Not sure what his symptoms were, but if I recall, they were loose and/or broken...

Does it happen when shifting between gears or just while driving in gear? The reason I ask is I had a clunk when shifting that then developed into vibration (to the point you could hear it) and it ended up being the rear halfshafts... I have aftermarket ones but that doesn't mean the factory ones can't have issues as mind did.

Sounds like the driveshaft bolts may be loose.....Hopefully it's not the rear halfshafts...

Got the car up on a lift today. I put it in gear and let the tires spin and the noise sounds like its coming from the rear diff. The shop wouldn't let me take the car all the way up on the lift while the tires were spinning so I didn't have a chance to look at the driveshaft spinning. I'm going to repeat the test on jackstands and see if I can see anything abnormal.

Dude at the shop said it was the TOB but I ignored that because of the symptoms didn't fit.
Another guy said it was the ISB but again the symptoms don't really match that either.

I'm leaving tuesday or wednesday so I guess I'm going to just let my friend work on it until it's running right enough to drive to MD.

If it's the rear halfshafts and not within the diff I recommend getting the DSS axles! I have them on my car (the new design) and love em!
