  • 5th Gen Not so good for Autocross Competition

FYI, interesting discussion and comments from a suspension and SCCA autocross guru, Sam Strano from stranoparts.com over on LS1Tech:

"First of all, I now hold a total of 15 SCCA Championships (of the Nationwide variety, not regional, divisional type stuff--not sure I can count that high). I've won about half in F-bodies and half in Mustangs. I owned multiple versions of both cars. I am a pony-car guy.

GM killed the Camaro in 2002. It took them years to have another one. What they came up with isn't my cup of tea. It's heavy, it's cramped (for me with a helmet on), it's wide, it's got screwy wheels and a stock suspension that's not as adjustable in the front. And with the 5.0 in the Mustang, doesn't really hold any sort of power advantage to make those shortcomings up. Years back when I first got in the Mustangs, a GM employee working on the 5th gen project called to ask what I would want to see on the car for autox use. Those things never happened--maybe because they don't car, maybe because of the lack of money. I don't know.

There are a lot of assumptions being made about why I don't do X, Y, or Z. I have my reasons. In this case, I wasn't shelling out $30+k for a car that was not competitive. My business is largely based on the fact I don't just sell parts--but that I USE parts and understand how they work, and win with them. I'm not tying myself to a car that can't win for loyalty. And fwiw, Ford has done way more to help me than GM ever did.

I'm considering what to do for next year, and that might include another LS1 powered car, but that's TBD at this point. "

He's talking about some of his 5th Gen concerns, and what its deficiencies are for autocross competition. It's instructive to me -- one of the things I would want to do when I get a 5th Gen is get the same size wheels on all fours. Also LS1Tech does cover 5th Gens and LS3s, btw.

Not that I care about autocross, but...

It would be nice to know what he means by "screwy wheels". He's pretty specific on the other stuff.

Most of your posts come out of left field and really have no real point other than to voice someone's opinions on a car you don't own or your views on a club you're not a part of.

That being said, it seems like this guy has some problem with GM and their support of him. Pedders and Pfadt don't seem to have a problem with the platform and have not only made a good deal of money but have also shown the 5th gen to do well on a road coarse. Stevenson motor sports hasn't had an issue getting the new Camaro in the winners circle.

2 different size wheels front and rear is my only guess....I guess he needs to talk with the pedders team and find out why they can get over 1+G's out of theirs,.....LOL

Just won 1st and 2nd place in the last race of the season too........

I do have a good point to bring up if we want to put this kind of message out on our
            5thgen forum.

If it provides NO value to us don't post it up. If the member wants to come over here and post it here as a member have him do it. Don't post his opinion on our site unless it is yours, if it is your opinion you may want to keep this at the 4thgen forum not the 5th gen.

Aside from his history in racing I don't really see much "4th gen nonsense". He said he might buy another LS1 powered car and if I was Autocross racing id take a corvette over any camaro.

I'm not disputing what Strano has to say...guy know his stuff.

I do have an issue with why a guy who doesn't own a 5th gen would be posting something like this. This isn't the first instance of this either.....

I have a 5th Gen in my future -- got some Camaro brand loyalty you could say, and zero interest in a Mustang either. No product is ever the best it could be. If I already had a 5th, I would be talking about the same stuff -- no difference. I don't believe in sacred cows. This is not left field for me -- all part of research for the new gen., and pre-planning mods -- its good to get some discussion for comparison. Strano does not know everything.

Also, I doubt I will sell my 4th Gen. 'vert just because I buy an 5th Gen -- comparing and contrasting the generations is valuable to me.

I also realized that suspension is just as big a deal to me as tq/hp -- I love canyon carving.

Interesting, FWIW, I just learned that the Stevenson Motorsports cars are NOT Camaros....they are just Camaro bodies, and they ran the exact same tube chassis cars as G6 GXP last year...

I guess NASCAR is not racing either with Toyota's??? It's a race car.......5th Gens won be happy and stop hatten....

Go put that statement up on another C5 site and see what it gets you. I am at my last straw. Be considerate please. I don't want to be forced to do the same thing that happened before to you at another site. We have not done it yet please don't force me to do it.

Got to agree dude, this is kinda our escape from our normal crap we put up with in our daily world. Sometimes you do make us ask ourselves "is he trying to piss us off". My suggestion would be just keep it up beat on the positive fun side of owning and talking about our cars. Don't take it personal, you seem like a good guy, just hold back on some of your opinions that's all. By all means we want you around, just maybe think before you type.
