  • Anyone have some L99 cam install tips

I am going to be installing my cam this weekend, and I am looking to see if anyone has any tips or gotchas I should watch out for. It it's avvt cam, but I am ditching AFM.

      I'm not! lol

Best advice i can give is to be patient. It isn't hard but tedious.

Dont force anything. With the right wiggle it should all slide into place.

I recommend upgrading timing chain while having it off as well.

Have you ever done one before?

I have never done an LS based engine. I have done countless old school small blocks. I have read what seems like a million posts and a couple books, but they are all based on LS1 and LS3. I am hoping the differences are easy enough to overcome.

Oh you will have no problems then. The cam swap portion is going to be pretty much the same. The only difference is the removal of the goodies. But its really not hard at all, you get full access by removing the valve covers so that part, i believe, should be the easiest of the swap. I do recommend removing the radiator if you can as i hate seeing a cam shaft get wedged into the side of one.

Let me get this straight; Are you turning it into an LS engine? Or are you using an L99 cam, just removing the vvt?

I am not doing the ls3 conversion, I am keeping the VVT. I am however getting rid of the AFM.

Which cam did you go with? We were talking about the VVT cams on my site. Its crazy the power they are making with those cams now.

sent from my galaxy s3. that would explain the errors.

Yea its pretty much the same thing as old school cars the only difference is the extra sensors and wires and stuff that you have to remove

But with the vvt you have to remove the heads and replace the lifters... easy

Besides that everything else is just a simple cam swap

Ohh and I forgot with the vvt there is a phaser restrictor that installs in the cam gear

I've never done one but I hear its not too hard

I went with a cam spec'd by rhino79 on camaro5. It is the same cam he is running.

Yeah it doesn't seem like the phaser should be to bad.

Tear down is taking longer than I thought it would, about 80% done.

Can't wait to hear it ... is it the one that requires flycutting?
