  • Faulty Gas Gauge

I have a 2010 SS and ran out of gas driving home from the airport. My gas gauge was just under a quarter of a tank. The gas light never came on and the engine light came on when it stalled.

Of course the dealer said everything looked fine, and if it happens again to tow the car in. WTF

Has anyone else had the same issue, with the car running out of gas with the needle showing around an 1/8 of a tank??

10 SS here and nothing like that has ever happened (knock on wood). Doesn't give you a warm a fuzzy feeling does it. When it gets close to the 8th mark, park it running at the dealer and hopefully it happens again. Of course, my luck, it would only happen if I'm on the road.

Since gas was low the fuel pump might have shut down. Once the fp reach a certain temp they will shut down as part of a safety precaution. If you drive til your nearly empty all the time you actually run the pump hot, and it's gonna wear out quickly. Fuel actually cools it off so try to keep it at 1/4 tank then fill up.

FWIW, I've been driving until empty a lot and never saw this.

when you filled up how much gas did you put in? If you put in close to 20 gallons that means you were empty and you have a faulty fuel level gauge or sensor.

If you fill up and its around 15-16 gallons then you might have more of an issue. GM is known for not having the best fuel pumps, and i have heard of some stories of 5th gen fuel pumps failing prematurely.

And yes a Fuel pump can fail due to running it dry, that is when it overheats. And sometimes after running completely out of fuel they never turn back on. But just as long as you dont run out of gas you are safe. I follow the 1/4 tank gas rule and have started my wife on the same thing as what it does is maximize the life of the fuel pump. The more fuel around it, the cooler it is, and the less it has to work as well. But running below 1/4 tank will not harm anything its just when you run out completely.

              Do you have a v6 or v8?

I worked on your car stealth2010! I remember it. I'm sorry I didn't throw parts at it but I can't fix what I can't see. I don't have an open check to just install parts, I need a reason. Your car didn't stall at all on me. I followed a bulletin to check the terminals at the fuel pump module and no issues. I exhausted all resources, even called technical assistance for you and no leads. We/I wanted to see if it happened again to rule out false occurance and to bring it in WHEN it happens. FYI GM pays for a warranty tow!!! If I can see it I can diagnosis it!
The fuel pump does get hot and don't suggest running it that low but you can. I haven't seen this issue yet on a 5th gen. You could have some obstruction in the tank that is not allowing the float arm to properly move in its full range of motion. If the level sensor was bad it would set a code and go to empty, not stall. It could also be a bad fuel pump that is getting too hot, electricity produces heat and fuel cools it. I'm guessing your car has seen plenty of low tanks in its life? May have caused premature failure, but still an issue since the low fuel light does not come on.
Please bring it back in to me and something will get done. I will probably have to remove the tank and check it out. Sorry it happened again to you, I will get it fixed!

You won't be laughing when a V6 smokes an SS... Just wait my friend, just wait. The mods are raining in this winter on my car.
