  • Lions, Tigers and Rattling Marbles, OH MY!

Looks like ZL1s are not immune, can anyone confirm? My Dad has this noise in his '11 CTS-V...

Maybe its just me but every supercharger I've ever heard makes some sort of noise. Isn't that the reason why most people install them on their car.

To be fair, whine and rattle are on opposite ends of the spectrum!

If there's a coupler in these like there is/was in the M90 on the L67/L36 motors, there's a possibility that it's a similar problem, but seems premature, given vehicle age. My L67 powered cars didn't show signs of this until after 100K

If in not mistaken that's a knock!

How's the oil pressure? Does it fluctuate? I'd stop running that motor.

If you read the details at that URL, you'll see it's a lot more than just a noise on the CTS-V -- not sure if that shaft disintegrating behavior (abrasive metal spring material on the shaft) is on the ZL1 too?

Welcome to the "GM Noise Club" -- it's an old-timers club from at least the LS1:

That bulletin has been updated to PIP4523F, if that helps. Has your dad brought it to a dealer yet? Has The GM rep listened to it? Not the service manager, a real GM district rep? And also the camaro LSA blower was redesigned and shouldn't be affected.

I'm the Dad with the V. Before I knew about the (apparently) common SC problem, I took the car in to Cadillac for a listen. Yup. they said I described it correctly as a rattling (like marbles in a jar) noise in the SC area. When I asked what they will do about it, they said is was normal but if it got "louder" I should come back. Hmmm how do you measure and describe louder to them? Just noticed that on the service invoice they failed to even note the complaint so I'll be heading back there shortly. I happen to have a sound pressure level measuring capability...

The bad part is that GM has investigated it and decided it is not detrimental. Doesn't quite mean you are out of luck. It's not good that there was no complaint on the repair order. That would be supporting evidence that it has been complained about already and then when a second complaint is made something could be done. If I were you I would go back and say you feel it is louder and unacceptable. If the dealer says they wont fix it then personally I would request the case be elevated to a rep and see what he/she thinks. Also does it rattle above idle? If so then the bulletin states that the spring has worn into the isolator and to replace the blower.

From the Jan-2013 Auto Enthusiast magazine, discussing the ZL1:

The Golden Age - Auto Enthusiast

                      Page 24:
"The Eaton-Supplied 1.9-liter Roots-type blower for the LSA engine also received some attention, including the swap of the stock supercharger coupler for a solid one that eliminates the tendency for the stock one to rattle at low engine speed and wear on the supercharger shaft."

So there ya go, the CTS-V issue is real, AND it looks like the issue exists on the ZL1 as well.

Besides all that it's a cadillac. It isn't supposed to sound like a truck!

Sorry to hear about your issue. The CTS-V is such a beautiful car.

So the supercharger was replaced, rattling marbles still present -- GM/Eaton still have work to do! There is an aftermarket remedy, but it VOIDS THE WARRANTY!
