I just turned my ZL1 with the automatic trans over 1500 and took it to the strip.
Much to my surprise when I set the traction control to race #5 and hit the gas at the line the tach hit 2500 and fell flat on its face, then took off again.
I thought I did something wrong so I went back at it and the same thing happened again.
When we got home I took it to my local dealer and showed the tech what was happening, he was just as confused as I was.
He called into the tech line for techs and they told him the car was protecting itself from abuse.
Anybody else had this problem ?
    know how to fix it?
The best time I turned was 12.78 really disappointing.

Welcome to the site! We have some very knowledgable people on the site, I'm not one of them! I'm sure one of them will chime in!

Dumb question, but what are the available traction control preset options?

Well I'm guessing you have stock tires on. If so the best mode would be mode 4. They rated mode 5 for drag radials so it might be throwing the computer because its sensing the tires are going to spin. I would say try it in mode 4 real quick. That's also the mode that has launch control built in exactly for the stock tires.

        Straight from GM engineers
"For launching the car at the dragstrip, Mode 4 has launch control enabled and it's tuned for these Goodyear tires on the street," Roma explains. "Go into Mode 4, hold full throttle, and it calculates the RPM it needs - it looks at ambient temperature and other things, and will hold between 3-4000 RPM. You do a moderate release on the clutch - not side-step it, or feather it, just a nice moderate release - and it will maximize wheelslip for forward momentum. It's very repeatable on the dragstrip - you can beat the traction control system, but it will do the same thing, all day long. If you just want to get a good launch, or you're at a stoplight, it's the 'don't embarrass me in front of my girlfriend' mode."

it does it in all modes with TC off.
From the manual "mode 3- 4 is not giving you full power" you only get that on mode 5.
there is no launch control with an automatic.

Mode 1 – Traction control set for wet conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.

Mode 2 – Traction control set for dry conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.

Mode 3 – Traction control set on Sport 1, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.

Mode 4 – Traction control set on Sport 2, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.

Mode 5 – Traction control set on Race, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Track. Launch control tuned for VHT-prepped drag strips and tires

Sorry didn't think about an automatic. This is also how the engineers say to launch an auto because the computer will bog if given too much gas too soon.

ach successfully requires a different technique.

For the 6L90 six-speed automatic, the best option is to roll across the beams, put your left foot on the brake pedal and raise the revs to 1500 rpm. With the transmission placed in M (sport mode) but still shifting automatically (no use of the shift paddles), release the brake as soon as the stage lights on the tree come on and progressively apply the throttle, to the point your foot’s to the board within the first 60 feet of the track. You want to make sure that you don’t apply the throttle too quickly, because with 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque on tap all you’ll do is either: A, spin those monster 305 section rear tires or; B, if the track surface is grippy, kill power to the engine, or bog, since the ECU will override in an effort save strain on the driveline (the car nevertheless features asymmetrical rear axle shafts and a stout 9.9-inch differential carrier to withstand repeated hard drag launches).

P.S. are you going to the track Sunday? I'd like a lane if your going.

I don't know how everything works on the ZL1, but it could be traction control or even torque management I'm thinking.

What tire pressures were you running on all four corners?
What launch RPM did you leave at?
Did you try to stall the engine up any?
Did you roll in to the throttle or did you just stab and go?
Did you drive around the water box or through it?
Did you warm up your tires?
What gear lever position were you in?
Did you let the computer shift or did you shift?

Can you give us your full slip so we can see all your stats?

Damn the ZL1 sounds complicated! I have a feel it was seeing wheel spin and some sort of traction control came on.

Next time you are at the track I would try to ease into the gas and work at doing it quicker until you find its limitations.

Did you drive around the water box or through it? In the box with a small burn out
Did you warm up your tires?

I heard from Chevy today .
They basically told me if I wasn't happy with the car I can return it.
and to call the selling dealer.
I tell you what when I called them and there was a possibility of me returning a ZL-1 with 2000 miles on it I received some real help.

The service manager and their top tech got on the phone with me right away.
After a Quick explanation of what was happening.
the tech told me a couple of tricks that should help solve this problem.
One was how to turn all of the controls basically to manual and this is the only way to get all 585 Hp out of the car, but be carfull it will just smoke the tire off if you let it.

I plan on going to Blackhawk on Saturday to try it out on a road course.
Then head up to GLD for Sunday.
