  • ZL1 axles fitting into a SS

So I have been pondering on this idea and was wondering if anyone has any information in regards to this. I know now that the ZL1 is finally out we can get parts for it. And from what I have found the parts aren't priced that bad.

My question is, would ZL1 axles work on an SS. I think would be a cheaper upgrade then 1400 up axles and they fall in the power range of what most of us high HP cars are running.

So just curious on what information others of you might of heard.

The diff itself is different then the SS... I don't believe the axles will work.

I believe ZL1 has different sized diff. That might change the spline counts and size..

Don't quote me on that though.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

I also have read that the 1LE has different axles as well. And they use the same diff as us. I wonder what the power handling is on them.

Thanks for the feedback guys and gal

I saw some of the axle threads. I'd just keep following. Someone suggested SS hubs and ZL axles, but I don't know what kind of integrity you'd have. I'm sure someone will physicaly try it soon enough.

should i be one of the first.... hmmmmmmm lol just kidding, id rather wait for someone else to try it.

although i am a little nervous now with this clutch. there is no more give at that point of my drivetrain.

I certainly wouldn't put a sticky tire on, that's for sure..

I know it can be done and have seen people run an FI stick on sticky tires close to 10s before breakage.... But, I've also known people with minor bolt-ons snap them on the street.. So, it's pretty much a dice roll..

As for the ZL1 axles thing... Put all the pieces and parts together that it appears you'd need, then see what the cost is. DSS now has the 1,000HP L4 axles for ~1200.00 new (might be able to pick up used).. I see L5s going for 800 or so from time to time over on Camaro5.

I can't really speak to the actual value of the ZL1 axles on the SS since it's still such a new parts availability... So, you might not even have a valid basis of comparison and I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough to think of all the what-ifs by mixing the SS and ZL1 driveline parts in that manner...

I know at least one axle mfg has interchangeable axles for their hubs, but I don't know if they're all made like that or not. I honestly don't get up under there enough to know.. The only time I really see mine is when the car is on a lift -- which is getting a bit frequent these days.

yeah the stock axles can be hit or miss. I mean shoot, look EVOwake. He has run faster than both of us and he's still on stock axles. so i know it can be done.

and i have been keeping my eye on the classifieds on C5 but those things are sold before you can type a response, but hopefully ill grab a set at the right price.

And as far as your car goes it really breaks my heart to hear all that you are still going through with her. It seems like its never ending. I really hope these recent issues are the last of your troubles man.

I would suggest watching for a used set of DSS - Although your very question has run through my mind as well.

I did pull a quick time on the stockers, but i feathered the clutch bigtime and only cut a 1.8x 60'... and i was still talking to the man upstairs! haha I felt the car hop once while doing a burnout and my heart absolutely sank!

Man a 1.8 is awesome. Best I could pull was a 2.1 on stock setup.

There really isn't much feathering with this new clutch though so we will see how long these axles last.

As much as I don't like it... I do have to admit that I push this car fairly hard and for all the annoying little things that have gone wrong, I really haven't had the big issues I could be having.

The oiling thing is a known TSB, so that's all done now..

My Vehicle Speed Sensor was throwing random errors, so that's getting replaced.

The other maggy oil leak -- who knows on that one. Could have been many things.

Pedders sent me all new coilovers on their dime, so that was just me eating the install and down time.

The chirping HVAC fan (2x) was a known issue -- fixed on GM's dime

My OE Muffler cans broke a baffle early on -- also fixed on GM's dime

The only thing I have to watch for now is my fuel sending unit..

Well I'm glad your hanging on to her through it all. We still have yet to line up next to each other haha.

I'm guessing you saw these prices over on Cam5?

LH AXLE PART # 22806795 GM List Price $277.90
RH AXLE PART # 22806796 GM List price $277.90
                              Rear Hubs Part # 22924741 GM List Price $206.04 each(same as ZL1)

That's a total of $967.88 in parts for the SS to make it 1LE axles -- I don't know the HP ratings.

                              DSS L4 1000HP Axles -- Rated and guaranteed to fit. --- 1,199.99

That's a difference of 232.11 between the existing L4 solution and the 1LE stuff..

EDIT --- Yeah, didn't see the gmpartsdirect.com link the other guy placed... That makes the price much different..
