It's not like lowering coils that have rate and height integrated in to the cut. Those gold slotted cog looking rings at the bottom actually will lift/lower the whole mechanism itself within an outer housing that bolts to the lower mount point. It's this system that actually allows you to have the adjustable height with a static spring rate. The overall rate of the system is then controlled by the valving. That's what gives the coilovers the benefit (and cost) over just springs..
