  • torque converter

As I noted in the sponsor area, I recently had a torque converter swap. Went with a 3200 from Precision. I am not going to pretend that I understand how this thing works, but if you're an auto you should seriously consider this mod. I launched the car like a rocket ship today, unreal how fast it shot out the hole. Its also more fun to drive on the street too. Crazy how the RPMs just hold through up shifts, and unreal on the drag strip. A good converter is worth up to .5 seconds on your 1/4 mile time. Thanks to the banned one for pushing me to the converter. He had it right, I should have done this mod first, then worried about the cam.

After talking with the Mike a couple of times and seeing how well your times improved from the last time we went to GLD (I think 4/1) this is now #2 on my next mods list

Check out the link below, it has some info on torque converters. I'll admit, made my head spin a bit, but helps understand a little how they work and what they do. In a nutshell, they help keep your RPMs in the powerband, doesn't actually increase HP, but more effectively uses what you have. I don't know if they are available or not for the v6, when I was looking they seemed to only be out there for the SS (6L80 transmission). They cost about $800, and install will run $300 to $500.

I dropped .8 from the visit last time, and this was the only difference. I have to chalk up a little to warming the tires up better, but clearly the converter did some magic.

It took me a few runs to figure out how to launch (don't do anything, just stab it on green). But once I did, holy crap, the car really moves now from a dig. My last run was my best at 12.08, and that was when I finally let some air out of the tires and brought the PSI to 25. I probably should be running them at 20-21, so I think there's a little more room to go a tad lower. I wanted to make a another pass, but my fuel tank told me otherwise.

I think there was another L99 with a tire, LT and a 3600 converter and he hit 12.4. Dollar for dollar, hard to get results like this from another mod.

Converters are good stuff, I've run anywhere from a 3200 to a 5500 in the past. Basically it will 'stall' to a higher rpm so you can then launch at spot higher in your power band. And the higher it flashes, the higher you will stay in the power band after the shift, some will call that shift extension or shift recovery. If you make peak HP at 6200, For all-out drag car NA you'd run a 5500 stall, and it would only drop to 4500-4700 on the shift. At that rpm, say 4700, you are still making 90% of the power you make at peak. If you have a flat power curve, like some big stroker, you might not be as concerned about staying in the top of your power band but it can depend.

One 4th gen I had I ran a 4800 8" stall with a TH400 and a transbrake. It 'only' went 1.48 on motor but 1.38 on 150 shot since it was flashing to like 5500 on the 'brake.

I'll do one eventually too, I need buy someone a 6 pack so they'll let me drive a 3600 I want to see if it feels like too much for me (with this car).

What was your best 60 ft?

Very nice, what did it run on that pass?

Do you really notice the 3200, are you stock gear'd?

I am still trying to figure out my new converter too. I am running a yank 3600. I tried launching at a bunch of rpms, I haven't tried just rolling on when the light changes. My best 60' so far is a 1.81 on a Nitto NT05R.

When I first got the car back from the install and tune, I was contemplating getting rid of the converter. Turns out the tuner who did my car just doesn't know how to tune the a6 trans. So I took the time to learn, and spent some money, and I LOVE the car now with the converter.

If anyone else needs any help with their transmission tune, let me know.

My run was 12.08 with the 1.6 60. I have nitto 555r tires, cam and long tubes. launching at idle was by far my best time.

Yank 3600 eh, any kinda bribe I could use to drive your car around the block? I'd just like to feel how loose it is compared to stock. Do you have a trans cooler too?

Yeah, I have a trans cooler as well. If you are up in my neck of the woods (gurnee) no problem on the test drive.
