Thought I would summarize the results of my recent mod in one place for anyone interested in doing something similar. I purchased a set of Kooks stepped header and high flow cats. I previously had a CAI Inc intake and Borla S-type cat-back installed as well. To make sure I knew exactly what gains this combo would give me I had a baseline done. On a Mustang dyno I made 377 HP/369 TQ. The final result was 411 HP/397 TQ. So my net gain was 34 HP/ 28 TQ.
The headers produced a smoother power and torque curve than the previous configuration. The gains grew nicely along the curves, not just spiking up giving a false impression of my overall power gain.
One thing to note, I also had pulls done with the stock tune and the headers. The tune did not significantly change the power curves, but did flatten the AFR and removed knocking I had. The tuner tried to advance the timing to squeeze a few more HP during the tuning process, but that proved futile. For some reason my timing on just the CAI was pretty advanced to start with which is why he thought my base number was higher that what he's seen on other near stock LS3s. Maybe there's more truth than I thought earlier about the gains to be had from an intake.
Thanks again to T-Bone for recommending Scott and SuperCar Performance in Minooka. Scott did my header install and did a great job for a real fair price. As before with my front sway install, he went over everything he did and reaffirmed every was done correctly. Wish I had a $500 torque wrench. Anyway, anyone who is looking for a good shop and priced right give Scott a shout.
