  • Primary Car?

So I'm still in the market to buy my first car which I REALLY would like to be a 2LT/RS in Black. I'm concerned about driving in snowy conditions and my parental units are trying to persuade me to get a FWD or AWD vehicle. I've looked at other cars...the ones I like are way out of my price range. Today I was in a parking lot and an orange SS with black racing stripes drove past me and I fell in love again.

I need to know from y'alls experience, how does it handle in the snow? I'm a pretty cautious driver when it comes to bad weather (clean driving record too, thats why I'm sticking to the V6...I'd ruin that driving off the lot in the V8, lol). I've been driving a 2000 toyota tundra since I was 16 (now 22) and that thing handles decent in the snow, I've spun it a couple of times too. And if I was going to use my camaro as my primary car is there even an option to put snow tires on the thing? has anyone heard of it? I went snooping around on google and I've heard mix reviews.

We put two 70lb bags of sand in the bed of my truck every winter to weigh it down, I think that would work too by putting it in the trunk in the camaro. lol...I REALLY WANT THIS CAR. And I've gotta convince my dad that I can handle it in the chicago snow before I can get it.

    Help? Thanks

I've got the 2LT/RS. I drove it all winter daily. I did put on the 18" rims and Pirelli Ice & Snow tire in Nov (The 20"'s summer's would have been a joke.)
It drove perfect in all types of snow and ice. I never had a problem. I also live out of town, so I was driving to work in uncleared roads a lot. Link below has some pics.

Another daily driver here. Winter was not bad in my non-RS LT.

Drove mine on snow and had no problems, I did put the 18 steel wheels and snow tires if you do that you should be fine.

kel I put mine away for the winter. While many drive it all year round... there is a another group that does not. As a "perental unit" myself I would recommend an all around car w/ front wheel or all wheel drive. My daily driver is a Chevy Impala. Not sexy but it is very reliable and good in all conditions.
I know that others may disagree...

I drove my 1st one V-6 1LT last winter and she handled great. But now that I have the 2SS RS V-8 I agree with Marc on putting her away for winter and getting a cheap daily driver.
A Penny saved...Well, Now I'm out of Pennies.

Here is a video for your viewing pleasure. This is a professional driver on a wide open frozen lake. This is not what you would experience in wonderful Chicagoland traffic. Plus the salt. Yuck...... Can't even think about it.

I haave a 2LT RS and i didnt drive her all winter. I have a winter car that i drive. I do know that when the roads are slightly damp even from a light rain it can cause a slight slide. It would really have to depend on where you drive all winter (main roads, sidestreets, highways, windy country back roads)

I have heard that as long as you don't have a heavy foot and put a nice set of winter tires (ie blizzaks or pirelli scorpion ice and snow) the v6 handles very well in the snow.

I have used a V6 Camaro as a daily driver for years -- granted the 5th Gen. is MUCH better in inclement weather, but it's not a big issue even in a 4th Gen. after you learn the car's nuances...

But my SS hibernates for the winter...

Well, once you're 18+, you can buy whatever you like... ;-)

So just curious, why did you step-down in rim size for the winter tires?

ok thanks for the help everyone, it may be cheaper for me to put snow tires on it for the winter and keep the rims nice for summer than buying two cars, that just wouldn't be financially smart right now. Ha and yes since I'm over 18 I can get whatever I want my parents just want me to be smart about it so thats why I'm researching.
