Catch can v6

Can someone shed some light if this is something I should be getting? My car is put away in the winter and only has 5500 miles right now.. I have read alot of the apex and c5 stuff but would like someone here to help, if possible. Does this affect the warranty at all?

I'm new to the V6 scene since purchasing Sharpie's car, but talking with Gary (GML1998) at the Hooter's meet, he said it was very important for the V6. Hopefully he'll read this and chime in. I still haven't done it on Melissa's car yet though, probably because I'm still buying stuff for mine.

I do have one on my V8. I checked it after the first 1000 miles and had about 2 tablespoons worth in the can. I'm still up in the air about it's value, but guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

The purpose of the catch can is to avoid oil consumption in the engine.

On a normal EVAP system, the hoses are routed into the intake tubing which in turn sprays oil into your intake which ends up being burned inside the cylinders.

Oil when burned creates a residue. Which in turn will start coating the valves, pistons, intake, exhaust, and everything else.

This can result poor air flow, lack of power, and a shortened engine life down the road.

So the idea of the catch can is to create a spot where this residue oil can be collected so its not ingested into the engine.

So in Freddie's case, the catch can eliminated 2 tablespoons of oil being burnt inside the engine all from only 1000 miles of driving. Now multiply that by 10 or even 1000... think about how much oil could be consumed in the lifetime of the engine.

And the V6's have been noted to have extreme oil consumption so it will be beneficial in that sense.

Does this affect the warranty at all?

That is a "well, it depends"

For example. If you install one and something acts up with it (check valve failure) and prevents the PCV system from working correctly and you end up building up crank case pressure that pops a seal, then, probably not since it caused the issue.

Same for getting water and other other atmospheric contaminants in to the crank case that end up damaging the system because of a missed filter or loose fitting.


Though, I personally haven't not known of anyone that has had an issue with it being installed -- outside of an inspector failing you for tampering with an emissions related system.

When I removed my upper intake and installed the ported intake my old manifold had oil pooled up in several spots.I was able to look at the back side of the intake valves when the manifold was off, there was some coking started on the valves but not that bad.This was at about 9000 miles.
I drained maybe 3-4 tablespoons out of the catch can after 1500 - 2000 miles.

Our LLT & LFX engines do not have the benefit of having fuel sent through the manifold,only air. The fuel going through a normal engine gathers any oil and burns it, effectively keeping the manifold and valves clean.
Also it does not matter if you use fuel additives that claim to keep the intake valves clean. As mentioned the backsides of the intake valves see no fuel.
It is possible to clean intake valves by introducing a cleaner ( Seafoam or BG fuel system cleaner) into the air intake ahead of the throttle body. This will help remove some of the coking from the back sides of the intake valve.
There are a few threads on Camaro5 on the process.
I would recommend a catch can to avoid the oil ingestion issues.
