  • V6 Full Synthetic Oil Change

I decided to go with a full synthetic after 3,000 miles. At the Libertyville Chevy open house I won a raffle prize, and after trading I was able to get the oil change for free. I also found out thanks to Camaro5 that the oil cap off the SS will fit on the V6. This is great so that now when the car goes for service, even if I forget to mention that, they will know thanks to the oil cap. Best part is now I don't have to change it again for another 10,000 miles.

10000 miles between oil changes?!?! Not wise.

I would have waited for the change a bit longer to let the rings seat, but to each their own... Synthetic oil is always better for the engine anyway congrats of your switch to the dark side
Racing is my life, everything else is just minor details.

Agreed... the oil may say good to 10,000 miles, but I wouldn't let it go that long. Even with synthetic, I change mine right around 5,000 miles. - I swapped mine over a bit before 3,000 miles.... though that was the 3rd oil change on the car by that point... hehe

I don't believe Mobil 1 synthetic claims 10K miles. I have used it for decades and never have seen a claim for extended mileage until they introduced M1 EP. Since M1 EP just became Dexos certified, there's no way GM was using EP in the engine from the factory. In all my cars (and I have five, two with 150K miles) I have always used Mobil 1 until switching over to EP when it was introduced. I always changed oil at 6K and filter changes at 3K. Now with EP and higher mileage filters, I'm keeping it for 12K miles and doing filter changes at 6K. My high mileage vehicles don't leak or burn oil, so IMO there's value in being overly cautious.

I just paid $30 for 5 qts. of M1 EP, while I think M1 was like $26. Even if you don't want to keep it for the 1yr/15K miles, the price difference isn't great enough not to use EP now that it carries the Dexos certification.

Ok so after doing some reading it's 7,500 miles not 10,000. I guess I wont need it "till" 10,000 miles.

Yeah, I was thinking of the EP, but you're right, it's 15K miles rated... the normal M1 actually doesn't seem to have a mileage rating any more, at least on the web site.

            Oh, and FYI-

The dexos cert is good, but it's OK to revert to the prior GM spec for full synthetic or normal oil if need be (addendum to the owner's manual) - Though more applicable to V6 owners that aren't going to switch to full synthetic. When last I checked, there were no dexos certified standard dino oils. Even the dealers I checked with were using whatever oil they had been using before the dexos spec was announced. -though the last time I checked on that was last fall.

Guys and gals please check the oil level in the V6 a lot if you are putting that many miles on the car between oil changes. Lots of people have been very low on the oil and some engine failures have been noted.....Just my .02......

                      Very very very good point!
Possibly other fuel fill up I would suggest popping the hood and having a look... it also gives you the chance to show off those underhood goodies too!!!

and if you want to save more money, just by your Mobil1 and filter at WallyWorld, and take it to the dealer and just pay the labor... Cost me $9.99 at work with my own stuff :-)

That has to be the worst failure anyone could be required to endure!!!

I wouldn't let a Chevy dealer touch my car ever again since I bought it. I just don't think they have quality mechanics. I'll do my own oil changes. Plus it just doesn't make sense when I have an ASE Master Certified mechanic for cars and trucks living in the household.
