If it's just 3m tape it wont hurt the paint but would be annoying/difficult to get off.
But, personally, I don't find it very attractive. Not a big fan of anything that really draws attention to the fuel door anyway, but I'd go for the satin nickel fuel door replacement if you're set on it.:-/

When you need to take anything off that has been put on with 3m or other tape, fishing line works really good then warm water and soap or goo gone. Don't use anything abrasive. I have found that when your doing mods like that, you never worry if u just pick up an extra piece ie fuel door. They shouldn't cost that much, and then if you don't like it , NO WORRIES.

the applique won't hurt the paint at all. As mentioned, removal/cleanup could pose some challenges if not done correctly. That being said, the round part of the fuel door itself is easily replaceable, whether that's to replace a damaged one, or install one of the aftermarket full fuel doors that are available. If you like this one, that's the important part. clean the fuel door well, and install...
I might suggest, though that you use some painters tape and temporarily attach it to the fuel door from the edges, and then stand back and make sure it's straight. once you have the layout straight, use a small bit of painter's tape to mark the straight line for the center part of the applique, so that you have a reference point to get it stuck on straight.

Will this harm the paint?
On a side note, my car came with the nickel finish fuel door. I didn't like it so much, so I bought a GM stock door for $30 and had it painted to match my car $70. Now I have both. It takes thirty seconds to swap them. Which I do from time to time. I like both now.
So, if for some reason you had to replace your original door...you're looking at about $100.sigpic
