CPC stated that due to my wheels being Chrome, the only color they can really do on them would be a textured black. Not the color I want and it wouldn't match my color scheme at all.. So, they're out. They seem like nice people though and that's the first place I've tried to get quotes from actually make mention of the chroming process leaving behind chemicals that could affect the coloring process.

I may end up being required to source the CompGray wheels from CorvetteForum like I had intended on in the first place.

Thats good to know, because my wife's rims are chrome as well. Sounds like i might be better off getting replicas for this purpose.

This is not a hijack, but since Scotch Man mentioned he got a bad caliper job, I thought I would mention for caliper work I used Mike "thepowdercoater" on C5. His work is most excellent.

Sorry HumanWiki, this doesn't help you, I know.

This is Sean, formerly of The Powder Pro.

I wanted to reply since I was told about this thread.

The situation is my fault. A perfect storm of bad timing and a very unusual coating problem that I had never seen before.

To match the color of Jim's RJT car, I got pretty creative with the powder. Ended up using a three coat combo. Not typically a big deal, or uncommon when color matching.

Laid the three base coats. Then put the decals on, and shot a clear and cured it all again. Standard procedure with decals on all brake calipers and I'd done it hundreds of times in 4 years.

For some damn reason The clear came out milky on the brakes. Not sure if it was the clear arguing with the combination of the basecoats below it or what, but it did it. Jim's car was in the air at the shop and we needed to put the brakes back on it. We agreed the best plan was to do so, Jim take the car back and finish his track season, etc and then when he stored it for winter we would remove the brakes and do them again under warranty.

About that time I recieved word that 6 month long negotiations to open my own insurance agency had succeeded. Tim agreed to take over the coating equipment and keep coating. And we agreed between us that I would still warranty the work and do the coating on Jim's brakes.

My first mistake was neglecting to tell Jim that I was changing careers until after he put the car away for winter, as he noted.

My second issue was a few weeks ago now I have had a serious family emergency that is still continuing, which I told Jim about today..too little too late.

I have offered to refund the coating and brake labor money to Jim, and I intend to do so. That's the fair thing to do for both Jim as the customer and Tim as the new owner of the coating business.

For the group of you on here who have dealt with me when I was coating, and were happy, thank you. It really sucks that this happened with Jim's brakes, and the timing just couldn't have been worse.

That being said, I would encourage anyone on here not to hesitate to take any of their parts to Tim to be coated. He does high quality work, and I don't want to see my parting error with Jim's car affect him. Like I said it really sucks that after 4 years of trying hard to keep a good reputation that I f'd up like this as I was exiting the business. I am truly sorry to Jim and Tim both for this mistake. Jim has decided he doesn't want me to coat the brakes again after the New Year, and I appreciate that he was willing to understand that my family has had to come first these last few weeks. I will do my best to get him his refund in a reasonable frame of time, and I am hopeful that there will then be no more posts on the forums like this.

Have a good and safe new year all.

Bad or not that was very upstanding for Sean to come on here and post. Good luck Randy. Last time I had anything done was chassis pieces from my 70 Z28 and Lo-Co did them and it was outstanding.
Man that really sucks...........but that's the coolest thing I've ever seen

As we see there are always two sides to every story. I am sure that Sean learned from this experience. Looks like both parties have found an acceptable resolution.

Very well thought out reply with a very detailed and rational explanation. Thank you for it.

Sean, I hope your family issues resolve themselves in the best possible way. Good luck with your future endeavors.

                  T.

PS. Wiki, if you had not bought a vette we would not be having these problems. TROUBLEMAKER!!!

The drag strip is like sniffing glue, it's cheap, it's a decent buzz, it doesn't last long and they are all the same.
Road racing is like China White Heroin, the buzz is stronger, the high lasts for hours, it's extremely addictive and they are all different.
I can't wait for my Track next fix.

Yeah, this certainly grew more than I thought it was going to when I asked the initial question.

Tim (Powder Pro) emailed me back on my initial request, I just haven't had a chance to respond or to look more in to it.. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to PC my existing wheels or just buy a set of Comp Grays from a vendor.

Though, I would like to know more about this potential issue since mine are OE Chrome wheels.. I've still not had another vendor say anything about not wanting to color the wheels (to Cyber Gray/Comp Gray) due to the nature of the chroming process. Is that just their process that leads to this issue?

I'm just being overly cautious with new things I've not done.. I'm not in the mindset to deal with another round of perpetual issues with a car... That's what lead me to ditch the last one.
